Fort Kochi, Kerala - A blend of Portuguese, British and Dutch Styles

On our recent trip to Kerala, we set aside two days to visit Cochin and Fort Kochi. We were put up in a hotel in Cochin. After a sumptuous breakfast, we headed to the pier to catch the first boat to Fort Kochi. The ferry ride from Cochin to Fort Kochi was fun. People were ferrying across bikes, cars and what not.

In 15-20 minutes, we reached Fort Kochi. Armed with the map of Fort Kochi, which I picked up from the Kerala Tourism Kiosk at the Cochin Railway station, we set out to explore the city.

The map proved to be an able guide. All major places worth visiting were listed on the map with directions. We did not need a guide. Moreover, we covered all the places on foot. It is a small place and one can cover most of the tourist spots on foot - much easier and you get to actually enjoy the place.

The first thing we saw was the Chinese Fishing Nets called as "Cheena Vala" in Malayalam. Numerous such fishing nets dot the entrance to the Fort Kochi pier. These large nets hang from bamboo posts with lights hovering above the net. These nets also have counterweights on one end in order to aid in easy-handling of the nets. Some local fishermen still use these nets to catch fish. However, it is more of a tourist attraction nowadays.

The Vasco Da Gama Square, a narrow promenade parallel to the Fort Kochi beach, has many tiny little stalls serving a wide-range of seafood – freshly caught and cooked as per your choice. There are also numerous coconut vendors around.

All sorts of local souvenirs are sold here – combs carved from fish bones, foldable straw hats, conch artifacts to name a few. Bargain hard.

The Portuguese, the Dutch and the British styles of architecture, have influenced Fort Kochi. The buildings here are a mix of all these styles. Just walking down the streets in Fort Kochi transports you back in time.

The first building that we came across was the Koder House. This wonderful building is the best example of the architectural evolution from the colonial to Indo-European style. Some unique features of this building were the verandah seats at the entrance and the red brick like facade. The floor tiles in Koder House are set in the chessboard pattern. It is now a hotel.

The Santa Cruz Basilica was built by the Portuguese. The church was elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. When the British took over Kochi, the church was demolished. In 1887, Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira custom-built a new building at the same. The church was then proclaimed a Basilica in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.

The Bishop's house standing on a little hillock was originally the residence of a Portuguese Governor. The 27th Bishop of Kochi – Dom Jos Gomes Ferreira, later acquired it. The house has large Gothic arches and a lovely garden.

The premises of the Bishops House also houses the Indo Portuguese Museum.

The Dutch Cemetery was consecrated in 1724 and is today managed by the Church of South India. The tomb stones here are mini architectural marvels in themselves.

The Jewish Synagogue in Fort Kochi was constructed in 1568, and is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth. There is a clock tower next to the synagogue.

The area around the Synagogue is the hub of spice trade and curio shops run by Jews – you will find any and everything you are looking for here. The place is called the Jew Street.

St. Francis Church - This is India's oldest European church. It was built in 1503 by the Portuguese. Initially built of timber the church was later reconstructed in stone. The British converted it to an Anglican Church in 1795. Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524 before his remains were moved to Lisbon. The tombstone remains though.

Other attractions in Fort Kochi are:
Vasco House
Thakur House
The Hill Palace Museum
Mattancherry Palace
Bastion Bungalow
Parade Ground
VOC Gate
Fort Immanuel

We spent a day moving around Fort Kochi and were so enamoured by the place that on our return to Cochin, we checked out of our hotel and headed back to Fort Kochi with our baggage.

We checked into a lovely home stay and made Fort Kochi our base for the next few days as we travelled around Kerala.

The Indo Portuguese Museum in Fort Kochi, Kerala

We caught a ferry from Cochin to Fort Kochi. The ferry ride was fun and on reaching Fort Kochi I felt that we had been transported back in time. Everything here had such an old world charm attached to it.

We headed for the Indo Portuguese Museum to look at the rich art and heritage that has been collected and preserved by the Late Dr Joseph Kureethara, Bishop of Cochin. The Bishop was committed to the protection and preservation of this collection for future generations and has succeeded in his mission.

The people of Fort Cochin still maintain a strong cultural kinship wit the Portuguese roots of their Catholic faith.

The Museum is located in the premises of the Bishop’s house and is open on all days except Mondays and public holidays from 9 a.m to 6 p.m.

Alleppey Backwaters, Kerala - Photos from Alleppey Visit

Alleppey - The Venice of the East

Our train to Alleppey was on time and we reached there early morning. Since we had already made arrangements with a HomeStay, we headed staright to their place. The homestay had regular rooms and traditional bamboo rooms - we opted for the latter.

After freshening up and a quick breakfast we headed out. The homestay is located very near the Alleppey canal where all the boats are docked. We opted for a 6 hour canoe cruise on the backwaters.

It was just the two of us with the canoe man. He took us around to a few nearby villages passing through numerous canals, past scenic islands, offering lovely views of coconut and paddy fields and toddy tappers at work. :) You can purchase a bottle of toddy and some spicy fish delicacies (tapioca curry, if you a veggie) and savour it as you go on the backwater ride.

Alleppey is famous for its boat races, house boats - "Kettuvalam" , coir products, fishes and lakes. During the harvest seasom (July-Sept) lots of boat races are held here.

Alleppey is also home to Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala which has the distinction of being one of the very few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Amazing isnt it?

After the 6 hour backwater cruise, we headed back to the homestay for a tasty Kerala lunch.

While in Alleppey we also went to the Alleppey beach which was desserted except for a few people collecting sand from the beach. A few dogs were splashing around in the waves. The beach was good.

We also visited the Alleppey Church.

Trivandrum Sight Seeing - Shri Chitra Art Gallery, Napier Museum and Veli Tourist Village

Our main interest in visiting Trivandrum was to see Raja Ravi Varma's famed paintings in the Chitra Art Gallery. Must say - he was an excellent artist. Some of the paintings looked so real - unbelievable. Photography is restricted inside the gallery - so you will have to visit Trivandrum to have a look at the art.

But here is a picture of the Art Gallery from outside.

We also visited Napier Musuem in Trivandrum. The architectural masterpiece was designed by Robert Chisholm, the consulting Architect of the Madras Government. The museum houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.

The museums are open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. On Wednesdays, the museum opens only at 1 p.m.

Also made a visit to the Zoo in Trivandrum.

All these three places are located within the same premises - the Museum Grounds.

We also visited Veli Tourist Village. The village has been built at the point where the Veli lagoon meets the Arabian sea. It is replete with fish ponds, wading pools and landscaped gardens, along with facilities for boating and water sports and a park around the floating bridge that connects the village to the beach.

The beach was deserted except for a few stray dogs that kept us company.

The tourist village is open from : 8:00am to 6:00pm.
For more information contact : 91- 471- 2500785

Boating facilities are available at the village

Massimo Holidays, Thrissur Cheats

Massimo Holidays a Travel Operator based in Thrissur, Kerala cheats a customer

A friend of mine wanted to share this info with fellow travellers and asked me to post this info on the blog. So here it goes - somthing different from the normal posts on my blog

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were interested in a Weekend package to Lakshwadeep from Cochin and as such looked up the web to find travel operators who made such bookings. Found a few and zeroed in on "MASSIMO HOLIDAYS" based in Thrissur.

The person from MASSIMO HOLIDAYS who interacted with me was one Ajit Verma. He said they can do the booking and asked me to send across the money - Rs 9000 for two people for a Weekend Package from Cochin on the 29th Nov 2008.

I accordingly made an online transfer into their ICICI bank account.

A few days later Ajit Verma mailed me saying that the cruise had been cancelled and another cruise would depart in December. I asked him to transfer my money back as I would not be able to travel in December.

He agreed to send the money back.

Days went by and the money wasnt transferred and neither did they call or mail me. I had to call them up every other day and ask for the status. And every time they would have the same answer - We will do it - today or tomorrow.

Totally Unprofessional and unethical organisation and staff.

Its now more than 2 months and those guys have not returned my money.
Beware of such travel organisers who are sitting out there just to dupe and cheat the public.

I have been robbed of Rs 9000 by dealing with Massimo Holidays.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Folks, an Update.
My friend called me up to inform that her efforts have paid off. She posted reviews on various sites. The Travel Agent finally returned her money back. Just shows to go that persistence pays off.
